Early Life & Roots
Born Sridhar Rao in Mangalore, he grew up in a devout family environment. From a young age, spiritual stories and the lives of saints captivated his imagination, planting the seeds for a life of renunciation and service.

1938 — 1948
The Path of Renunciation
Drawn by an irresistible call, he journeyed to the Himalayas. Under the guidance of his Guru, Swami Sivananda, he practiced intense austerities (Tapas) and immersed himself in the study of Vedanta, eventually embracing Sannyasa.

1960s — 1980s
Presidency & Global Mission
Swami Chidananda assumed the presidency of the Divine Life Society. His leadership saw the expansion of the mission from Rishikesh to Bangalore, and eventually to the West, establishing centers in Chicago and beyond.

Universal Temple Vision
His final and perhaps most enduring contribution was the vision of a “Universal Temple” — not of brick and mortar, but of the heart. He taught that the true temple is the space where all faiths converge in the service of the One Truth.
